Anatolian Shepherd    Age: Young Adult

Health: Needs to be Neutered, Abused/Neglected

This big guy showed up in my yard on May 4th and has been hanging out under my house and porch. He is very sweet and loves to be pet, especially behind his ears. I have tried locating owners but he seems to have been neglected and traveling for a few days. I set out food and water daily for him but he cannot stay here. I have two of my own large dogs and cannot afford him. He needs to be seen by a vet because he had what looks like a heat rash on his neck. He is very shy and timid, walks well on a leash but does not like them. He will not load up into a vehicle and if you talk loudly he gets scared. I think he may have some separation issues ... Rescue Me ID: 15-04-27-00687Luke the Lover (male)

Anatolian Shepherd Mix    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

I met Luke at the spay/neuter clinic when I took another load of critters to fix. One of the techs showed him to me and explained that he came from a ranch. They had to give him up because a smaller/timid dog was afraid of this gentle giant. So I agreed to take him and rehome him -- which hopefully will happen soon because Luke wants to adopt me! LOL We weighed him to get him fixed. 90 lbs He's on HW preventative, is house trained . . . and is a Houdini! Luke spent his first night here -- part of it, anyway -- in a long covered pen. He managed to get the gate open and met my husband at the back door at 0600 this morning! He parks himself ... (Read More)near the door of whichever room I'm in. I had to go on an errand, a few minutes ago. Nobody else was at home. I returned to find Luke on the front sidewalk, waiting for me. [sigh] That makes twice within his first 24 hrs here that he could have taken off for his former home. But he didn't. I really don't need another dog, folks! And, by the way, he's also friendly with these other dogs . . . AND my husband. P.S. I'm listing him as "Luke the Lover" because we have another Luke listed. (Less)

Animal ID: 15814-In FosterAtlas (male)

Anatolian Shepherd Mix    Age: Young Adult

Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Atlas #15814 - This Anatolian Shepherd mix is one smart dog! He was picked up at Chicken Express where he had been hanging out for free dinners. He is probably around two years old and weighs about 60 pounds. He LOVES playing ball and will bring it back to you to throw again and again. Atlas is such a lover. With his soulful gaze, he almost commands you to give him a hug on the spot. He will follow you everywhere you go, loves to be petted, and walks great on a leash. He uses extra caution when taking treats from your hand. Everyone who meets Atlas falls in love immediately because he's such an awesome dog. He appears to have had some ... (Read More)training, but did not have a tag or microchip. If you are looking for a great dog already trained who loves to play ball, but will also be happy to lay by your side, Atlas is the dog for you. Assessment from Ray, GAP's resident dog trainer! Understand the breed!! Anatolian dogs are not herding dogs but are flock protectors. If not socialized by a strong knowledgeable person can become very wary and protective of family members against strangers. With a strong, in-charge leader, they can be great family dogs. Atlas is very calm, but he is an alpha dog and will need a strong leader to guide him. Atlas did not show well at the shelter and I believe his distrust of strangers approaching him in a confined space made him fearful. He did not want to get in the car at first, like I was confining him to another small space, but when I got in the car and called him, he jumped in and was fine for the whole ride. He loved going to the vet and greeted everyone who came out to see him with gentle respect. Atlas will form a strong bond with his family and will be a really good dog. Neutered and vaccinated. Anatolian Shepherd    Age: Young Adult

Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

We would like you to meet Atlas. Atlas is a pure Asian Shepherd also known as Central Asian Ovtcharka. This breed is one of the oldest breed in dog history. However, they are very rare here in the US. Atlas has all the traits and temperament that is common and prevalent in this breed. He is a giant baby and loves his owners. However, he is not good with other dogs. Based on his breed he is more of a protector and a guardian for his owner or animal that he is guarding. We are working on socializing Atlas. He is a gorgeous boy that loves to be petted and brushed. He came to us from a kill shelter and was HW positive. We have ... (Read More)completed his heartworm treatment . He is doing great !!!! You may notice in the pictures his ears and tail have been docked. The docking in very common to this breed. If you have wanted a giant breed and one of the most beautiful dogs you will ever meet, please consider meeting Atlas. He currently weights 130 and needs to put on another 20. He is as large as or larger than a Great Dane in height. He has to be the only animal, no dogs and no cats. This breed, puppies range from $800 to $2000 for a puppy. In concern for families with small children, we will not adopt a dog to a home with any child under the age of 10. This is due to the large size of Atlas and the safety of your children. Our dogs are not aggressive or mean in any way, they can just knock down children easily. If you would like to visit atlas please contact St. Cloud's Rescue at www.stcloudsrescue.org or call 1-469-952-3332 or 1-972-679-5319. PIease Read Before Adopting an Anatolian Shepherd in Texas
Anatolian Shepherd Dogs can make good pets in Texas if they match your IifestyIe. The Anatolian Shepherd is a large breed with strong herding instincts. Anatolian Shepherds need strong leadership from their masters and are matched best with owners who have experience training dogs. An Anatolian Shepherd is a very loyal dog with strong protective instincts towards its loved ones. Anatolian Shepherds are wary of strangers and need to be introduced to new people. An Anatolian Shepherd is very friendly towards people he knows well. Anatolian Shepherds are caring towards children, but may not know their own strength and therefore need to be supervised around younger kids. A large fenced yard or farm environment is best for Anatolian Shepherds. Its ability to herd animals and protect the perimeter of a property makes the Anatolian Shepherd an excellent working dog.

Anatolian Shepherd
lnteresting Anatolian Shepherd Trivia Low-Cost Texas Spay & Neuter Clinics
Anatolian Shepherds have long been valued by herdsmen for their ability to best wolves in a fight. Anatolian Shepherds are very closely related, some say identical, to the Kangal, which is the national dog of Turkey. Exporting Kangal dogs from Turkey involves so many restrictions that it is effectively outlawed. Dogs similar to the Anatolian Shepherd existed over 6,000 years ago in Mesopotamia. Anatolian Shepherds are very independent and will take personal responsibility for guarding a flock.
